Hi folks.
I do a lot of Matrix reading (hence, being here).
My question is:
Should we be putting much stock in information provided outside the Matrix trilogy?
Obviously, The Animatrix and Enter The Matrix are closely tied in with the trilogy, therefore we must take them into account.
But what about the other sources of info? Anyone read "Goliath"? or "Path Among Stones" (or is it Path Amongst Ones"?)?
While those particular examples don't give away a lot, surely we must take them into account? They are approved Matrix stories (as there are many other officially commisioned tales), so we have to!
Don't we?

I see what you mean...
But why not use the comics as a source? I mean, the Matrix world is bigger than Trinity, Morpheus, Neo (ok, he is THE ONE) et al, the movies just pin point the story about The One. I think the Animatrix proves that.
I find it difficult not to refer to the info provided by other Matrix sources for that reason...anyone agree?

The reason I wouldn't take the comix as law is that they aren't being written by the Wachowskis, even though they are sanctioned by the Wachowskis. The wirters don't really know evrything the Wachowskis had in mind. For instance, they might refer to something about Seraph's past in the comix, but the Wachowski's might come out with something completely different.
I guess what I'm saying is that the Wachowskis will have final say in what goes on in their story. It's a universe and continuity that they created. So no matter what anyone else writes, it's subject to change if a Wachowski wants it that way. To me, this also includes the non-Wachowski cartoons in the Animatrix, although I think the Wachowskis laid out a general idea for each of the animators to work off of.

It is well worth remembering that Lucasarts and the star wars logo have a very solid labelling structure or what is official, or "canon" and what is not part of their continuity. Now even with this, there are *still* frequent arguments on fansites as to what is and what is not part of the canon continuity. On occasion, Lucasarts itself seems to give mixed messages as to what is in and what is out. Its not an easy area to regulate, even for big daddy Lucas.
Now if we look to our Wachowskis, then it is not surprising that the area of officiality is a hard one to deal with. In the end, the Matrix is a wonderful mix of "take what you want" and i like it that way, it keeps it alive and vibrant. One man's matrix is another man's dreamworld and that is fine by me.

Absolutley
We therefore will run into conflicts when discussing The Matrix, although most people seem to base their views on the films alone, which is fine, as long as the answer doesn't lie within the realms of exo-Matrix material!
