yeah, Fatpie42, I still have to get that book. I know, most people think it's really great and all, I just haven't had time. I do have The Gnostic Bible, which I'm about 90% happy with; it contains a lot of so-called gnostic texts, and reasonably good translations... but the authors tend to make statements (as well as some bits of translation) that they don't back up with sources, and that kinda bugs me.

The two books that I have repeatedly quoted from and used as sources here, and which I have to say pretty much changed my life, as it were, are Tim Freke and Peter Gandy's The Jesus Mysteries and Jesus and the [Lost] Goddess. These along with The Hero With A Thousand Faces have made me look at ALL mythology in a whole new way.

I have to ask you, WHO wrote about Christ's death who actually saw it happen?

Then, prove it. Have you never heard of a "nom de plume?" I am not trying to be obstinate. I am merely trying to be scientific - a point of view shared by gnostic philosophers; Plato was no less a gnostic than was Simon Magus.

It is written in the Vedas: "Truth is One. The sages speak of it by many names."

Jesus was a man. Jesus was a myth. Either way, the truth will set you free. And, as Obi-Wan says, "Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly upon our own point of view."

So there you go. Your own point of view will set you free. "Know Thyself" again! Cool

Much to learn, I still have.

The bit Elaine Pagels was quoting wasn't from the gnostic gospels. It was a piece of writing directed against the gnostics. It was saying that those who had watched Christ's death knew the importance of it and used this to discredit the gnostics who disagreed with matyrdom (not realising that they weren't against matrydom, but against voluntary and 'as good as suicidal' matyrdom)

Anyway I was of the impression that historians have found details from unbiased sources which support that Jesus was crucified.

Elaine Pagels book is not a source of gnostic scriptural texts. She merely explains the historical background to the texts. The best book for gnostic scriptures is, undoubtedly, the "Nag Hammandi Library" which is as good a compendium as you are ever likely to find. Smile

THanks for the last bit about Nag. That's the phrase I was looking for but in reference to the previous parts of the conversation I'd like to add that, Jesus is part legend part truth a prophet like every other mortal prophet but not the diety the church recreated him to be. The Messiah came then and now and everyuother time in history. We and the computer in front of you and each blade of grass by your door is made of quantum particles everything in and beyond this world is made of quantum particles, That look to those who can see their movement not unlike the computer code matrix in The Matirix, but it has better colors and the designs are not all in lines. So you see everything is made opf the same particles of everything else this is evedence of "God" in everything this is the multiple comings of the Messiah every object and animal born.
Think about it, The world would be a great place if everyone had a Messiah complex and accepted others complexes as well Wink

that avatar, vato, might be considered a wee bit offensive to some... particularly because it looks like the exact movie frame that Akshat Gupta used for his avatar, if it is not directly lifted from Akshat's avatar itself (which is what I suspect).

But, since the post was pretty much incoherent, it is probably okay to ignore it. Cool

I read up the page a bit, Fatpie, and I wanted to let you know that I bought The Gnostic Gospels a while back, but I haven't finished it. I have so many books I am reading, it's hard to finish even a short one like that without getting sidetracked by another. But it's pretty good so far. Smile
