[Matrix Reloaded]
Niobe: "What if all this - the prophecy, everything - is bullshit?"
Morpheus: "Then tomorrow we may all be dead, but how would that be different from any other day? This is a war, and we are soldiers. Death can come for us at any time, in any place..."
Morpheus: "Now consider the alternative. What if I am right? What if the prophecy is true? What if tomorrow the war could be over. Isn't that worth fighting for? Isn't that worth dying for?"

The important purpose of sunglasses is that it used to conceal Morpheus and Seraph's eyes, when they take a peek at Persephona's cleavage.

The sunglasses are there to represent something. While wearing the glasses (no matter who wears them), the characters are more than human -- they perform superhuman feats, and deal with things outside the realm of typical human experience. When the glasses are off (in the real world, when visiting the Oracle, etc) the characters are human. They react like humans to human situations.

This is an old trick in comic books. Superheros are often drawn with completely white eyes, especially when performing some superhuman ability (Think Storm in the X-Men movie as well).

It doesn't mean that they can't perform those abilities without the sunglasses, but it's just another indicator.

For Smith, the glasses incidated when he was undergoing human emotions. Every time he displayed lots of emotion, the glasses came off. (Matrix - the fight with Neo and the monologue with the captive Morpheus; Revolutions - after overwriting the Oracle, and during the finalo fight with Neo). It's all indicative of humanity and its lack.

That's a really good theory! I'm liking this one the best so far.

I think sometimes the sunglasses were taken off because they got kicked, punched or broken, so they didnt have a choice haha except for some instances like the burly brawl hmmm interesting. Also its a good way to conceal the stunt double, I like the one idea splinterinyourmind pointed out about how the revolutionists use sunglasses in the matrix because their not use to the light of the sun anymore, being that the real world is dark. I also think its a matrix theme. I wonder if the newly made revolutionists mistook ordinary ppl in the matrix for one of them because they happen to be wearing a cool outfit and a pair of shades, morpheus would probly be like "no you idiot (hits him over the head) hes still a part of this system stay close to me you still have alot to learn."

I can't remember exactly, didn't Smiths SunGlasses brake?
Couldn't he just think up new ones if that happened ?^_^

I'm more interested in the clothes, especially Neo and Morph.
The change is noticable, and I like how Neos outfit in Rev/Reload make him look more confident like he mastered something.
Morph...hmm the suit and tie give him that knowing look. Like he doesn't have to prove anything.

Plus if I had to spend my life in Zion wearing a potato sack I'd think of the fanciest black outfit I can when I plugged back into Matrix Cool
Hmm nothing in leather...something like cloth lol. And pigtails~!

Anyway
the superhero thing is kind of right too. Giving characters a (the heros) a certain look makes them rememberable. Which brings back to that begger in Zion look...I mean come on!

As always, i hope nobody has already said this, but i recently read that the sunglasses reflect a lot, as more symbolism that Neo has exited "Wonderland" and is seeingthings how they really are. Notice how Morpheus wears sunglasses when he talks to Neo about making the choice? Morpheus already knows the truth.. Neo (at least not that we see) doesn't wear them till he is out.

Many moons ago, in this very forum we discussed the 'sunglasses' thing.
We came up with two different theories regarding them:
1) They somehow helped to adjust to the hue of the Matrix or to help balance the R/B/G...

2) As the poster above me wrote, Reflections. The Warshawski's were very keen on reflections in the Matrix... Cool

Yeah, we already knew that only people who know the truth or agents wear glasses. But trinity isn't wearing glasses when she is first seen in the matrix and it still doesn't explain why Morpheus takes his glasses off to fight the agent on the lorry in M2.

I think it is to make it look cool. A kind of uniform for freed minds. Groovy!

Maybe the thing with trinity is that, the sunglassesreflect truth or whatever, and Neo wasn't ready to se the truth just yet. And i really refuse to belive it was just to be "cool." I think that everything they have in the movie is there for a symbolic purpose. That's just me though. Think about it... even the graffitti has a significance....

i remember lawrence fishburn saying in an interview that he took off the shades in the fight in reloaded on top of the truck in order to show that morpheus was more wary and vulnerable....

so perhaps the shades are to show a sign of confidence in their abilites
