I saw it the other day and, i must say, i have been very impressed with the trilogy. It really was a fine piece of work indeed.

I still think the Matrix series holds its own in comparison and i would rate it a second place to the Rings films, which is still a long way above all other film works. The matrix has a lot of concentrated punch and the image and tension are very slick indeed. You could say that the matrix films are a kind of rollercoaster ride wheras the rings films are more of a tour around the theme park.

Both efforts were top notch and i do not know what will top them.

A fantastic movie. But I dislike that they cut out 1 hour (which will be on DVD). Oh, well, 190 minutes and I don't shut up Whitelaugh

As a negative comment (hey, this movie rulez, but I want to give vent to my feelings Twisted Evil): The last 20 minutes were kitsch-as-kitsch-can: Slomo, blurred light, shiny colors, "I love you" "I love you too"...

Could have been worse, they could have had the last twenty minutes showing `hilarious` out takes and goof ups. Or, in Shrek style, they could have had a karaoke moment.

return of the king is easily the best movie i've ever seen, i like it so much, they could have done whatever they wanted with the last 20 mins and i wouldnt have cared. it beats the matrix any day, and it also leaves its prequels in the dust

Return of the King was awesome. It really was.

But The Matrix has a different quality of its own...the ingenuity of it makes viewers of the movie think of its meaning afterwards...but The Return of the King was just a movie that you watch and say "o its awesome". do you get me?

the two are totally different genres so....it's kind of hard to compare the two as in good / bad. each has its own unique characteristics.

You're just jealous 'cause the voices only talk to me.

Am I the only person who thinks Return Of The King was one of the biggest piles of bollocks they have ever seen? It was a complete travesty to Tolkein's original novel.

"I'm not a man" *stabs* - lmao! Let's forget to mention that the knife that one of the hobbits is, at this point, plunging into the Wraith's foot is in fact an enchanted blade and that THIS is why he was defeated! Otherwise you might as well send in an army of women. "Quick, get the men to retreat! The women can kick ass better than us!" Smile

As for the ridiculously annoying death scenes, the scene where Frodo and Sam are unaffected by volcano fumes, the half an hour ending with a homoerotic scene in Frodo's bed and a 15 second marriage, Denethor going mad despite not having the palantir which sends him mad in the book and the fact that the whole movie was one big fight scene and no plot....

Well quite frankly, it does not even come close to being as good as the matrix movies - never mind surpassing them!

Agree with FatPie. Ring doesn't even come close to Matrix.

Ring is entertaining at times and has good effects, but surely lacks the depth of matrix.

Extremely good movie. Some of the camera angles and CGI effects are incredible. But I was so pissed that they cut the Houses of Healing! That was one of the most important parts of the BOOK! And yet, they make all this jealously-Sam-going-down-the-mountain-to-go-home crap that never even EXISTED! Grrr! My only hope is that it will be in the extended addition.

To be fair, when Fellowship Of The Ring came out I was praising it with everyone else. I thought it was better than the book. I was particularly keen on the inventive way they killed off Boromirs character. The only problem I had with that one was the rather lengthy ending. It would have been better off with the book's cliffhanger ending.

But then Two Towers came out (that is my favourite book in the trilogy btw) and I thought it was absolutely dreadful! Not only did it keep showing close ups of people's faces at the end of each scene for no good reason, but it changed Gimli into comic relief! When a scene in which Aragorn falls into a river was added for no good reason as well as a scene where there is a small wooden door on the front of a fortified wall (i mean, please!), I couldn't stand it any more and I gave up my interest in the whole thing. I was particularly peeved by the fact that they removed the cool ending from Two Towers and left it til the next movie.

When ROTK got so many wonderful reviews I was convinced that the problem was solved and that this would be a good movie after all. What did I find? Well you can imagine my surprise when I was greeted with the worst movie of the entire trilogy! Not only was it rubbish for all the reasons already mentioned, but they couldn't even do the ending of Two Towers properly. Why the hell doesn't Sam use the ring? Sam is supposed to have a brief period of responsibility starting from the end of Two Towers. In the movies he remains a pathetic slob for the entire time!

I know EXACTLY how you feel, man! The Two Towers is MY favorite book of the series too, and they completely screwed it up. I agree on the Gimli part, too, I hated it! He ran for like, 5 days, and he never panted. He doesn't burp, either. And he's VERY dangerous with an axe, and not just BRAGGING either. It's SO annoying that he just becomes this wimpy little sniveling stupid short hairy man with a beard. *laughs at self* And the Legolas-skateboard thing? COMPLETELY POINTLESS! HOW THE HELL DOES THAT HELP THE PLOT? Grr!
But I liked Return of the King, minus some parts where they completely screwed up the plot.

Gimli was funny though. Uncle Ben

And in ROTK Legolas was too awesome...i love that scene where he kills the elephant thing and all the people on it...and then after his spectacular kill, Gimli says "That only counts as one." HAHAHA... Whitelaugh
...I don't know if that's the Legolas-skateboard thing you're talking about?

I do agree that the movies don't do the books justice, but they are still magnificent. Many of you will probably disagree with this, but I don't really think people should compare LOTR to the Matrix. It isn't a fair comparision because they are two completely different genres of cinema, and both movies were great in their own ways. Each had defining characteristics that made them enjoyable.

i agree the first two lotr movies were on par with the matrix, but the 3rd just sucked im my opinion. The last half hour love fest ruined it.

Who are you agreeing with? The two towers wasn't on a par with the matrix. It sucked - BIG TIME! The connection between wormtongue and Saruman was not dealt with at all well. The trees never did anything but flood Isenguard (In the books they actually kill Orcs - The Orcs run to hide in some trees and never come out Smile) In a book with so much excitement I couldn't understand how they managed to make it so boring!

fatpie, I'm not comparing the books and the movies, I rate the movies seperately than the books, and the first two movies were great, even though they didnt follow the books exactly, and the books are way better. This is how i rate them, Fellowship is a little worse than The matrix, Two towers is slightly better than Reloaded, Return of the king much worse than Revolutions, so Matrix to me is 2/3 better, which is why its my favorite, over Lotr.

Two towers isn't slightly better than Gigli - never mind Reloaded! It is an awful movie.

Fellowship - Shocked the crap out of me that it was made, I enjoyed the books but not enough to go to fan sites etc. Thought it was good but not as good as the book.
Two Towers - Wasn't as good as the Fellowship or the book (Two Towers was my favourite book aswell) and the Faramir bits just bored the crap out of me Sam-"Mr Frodo, Comeback" Frodo-"Eribirur, I can't act foooor crap"
The Return of the King - Was an utter let down, shocking camera angles and constant shots just panning over the battle field, not really seeing any good action. Gimli's comic relief wasn't as bad as Legolas' "Here I come to save the day, I'm invincible and I'm gonna skate down the stairs on a shield with cinematic music cus I'm so cool." Taking out the Saruman being murdered by wormtongue scenario pissed me off thoroughly. In the book they came back to the village and it had be over run, but they were like gods and easily got rid of the wildmen showing how far they'd really come.

Well for the odd 9 hours of these movies put together I was bored shitless for 4. But apparently the extended editions kick absolute arse, and the RotK extended edition will probably have the real return to hobbiton scene (apparently they filmed it but took it out.)

Well..... here I am.

Maxius, nice avatar. What series is it from?
Gollum was funny. I love how he talks in third person. It makes me happy.
I agree; you shouldn't compare the two, because they both have their good and bad side, but ultimately they are too different to compare. It's like comparing an alternate midevil reality with the future.

i like how gollum talks in third person too...my friend is so good at imitating him it's scary haha

...but in the beginning of rotk when they show smeegle turning into gollum, and smeegle murdering his friend for the ring....THAT was really scary.

That fish scene was kind of amusing, in my oppinion. He's like "fissshhhh" and then he bites this chunk out of one. It just makes me giggle for some reason (but then again, I'm insane, so don't mind me).
I also love his little poems about the forbidden pool. *sings* The rock and pool, is nice and cool....
I love his black gollum. He's so entertaining. Especially to make fun of! (Take this like: Then we takes it from him, and we be our OWN master. And then make "master" sick. Then LOTR becomes REALLY funny) Like the secret diaries, which are HERE:

They also have some secret journals somewhere....
