The names were probably inspired by the Greek history taught or that they read while inside the Matrix. We see Morpheus make references to Alice in Wonderland and the bible showing us that the Matrix is about as close to our world as can be and thus people are taught everything we were within its universe.

The tech used to build the hovercrafts appears and can best be assumed to be Machine based. The Architect reveals that Zion has been destroyed five times and built six times. So to keep the cycle in motion its not to hard to figure that the Machines gave the first 23 people freed by the former one a helping hand in building a city.

A place to give those "freed" from the Matrix a place to live and so that they could easily be watched by the Machines. I'm sure it didn't start as a city but more of a coloney and as more and more people were freed from the Matrix it slowly grew and grew.

a helping hand? i think it's a bit more than "help," unless you think that 23 people freshly freed from pods who've never worked their muscles before can forge giant doors, or dig miles and miles of tunnels with their bare hands.

don't tell me that you think they made these before the war and that they've lasted through six iterations of Zion...

A good point but then you have to ask several questions. Who take them Zion and how do they get there? Then ocne they get to Zion we have to wonder was it already built or did they do so from scratch. 23 people can't build a city that size on there own so lets say that the Machines flat out do help those people build the city. But then what about the war? Machines help Zion and then the two jsut start fighting? Doesn't make much sence does it?

So no I don't think that the same Zion has been standing there for who knows how long and after being destroyed five times. Nor do I think 23 people can just build a city from scratch. So there must be a meeting between the two and the only logical conclusion is that the Machines help those 23 people build Zion but did so in a way that they remained oblivious to what was happening.
