I realise this will have been posted other places, but I'd like to have them in one place, just to make my life easier.

Neo = New, letters of One
Trinity = Father, Son, Holy Ghost. There is also a Trinity Sunday.

As you can see, I have a long way to go before I fully grasp the meaning of the names and their inter-relationship with characters and the plot.
Please add the ones you know and we'll see what the list looks like at the end Whitelaugh Bazar

Morpheus = god of dreams, son of Hypnos
Merovingian = line of French kings apparently decended from Christ.
Persephone = Wife of Hades, god of the Underworld, daughter of Demiter.

Can someone tell me why?

Cypher = One having no influence or value; a nonentity. A cryptographic system in which units of plain text of regular length, usually letters, are arbitrarily transposed or substituted according to a predetermined code. The key to such a code.

Niobe = Queen of Thebes, daughter of Tantalus and a goddess, she was so proud of her children that she scorned the goddess Leto, mother of Apollo and Artimis, and says that she should be worshipped as she has 7 sons and 7 daughters. The two children of Leto kill all the children, the King of Thebes commiting suicide when the sons were killed. Niobe begged for her youngest daughter be spared, which she isn't. The queen is turned into a stone which weeps continously, even to this day.

Translation of Thomas Anderson: my opinion

I read at the right place on this fabulous site

"Thomas A. Anderson"
Ander = "Man" (Greek)
Son = "Son"
Anderson = "Son of man".
"Thomas A." is probably related to "Thomas Aquin" a saint of the catholic church.

My opinion is as follow:
Résume In English

Translation of the name Anderson, or its interpretation like " fils de l'homme " or "sons of man" is appropriate to me completely in the context of the cosmolie of MATRIX.

An attribute also given to Jesus. Moreover "Neo Anderson" would mean "New son of man".

The name of Thomas seems quite as significant to me.

The thesis of filiation philosophical Thomas d' Aquin in the purest tradition neo-pythagorician quite as interesting, insofar as it comes to echo the Architect whom one will discover with MATRIX Reloaded, allusion nonbuckled to freemasonry and his rooting in Pythagoricienne philosophy. Without counting the name of certain Pasteur illustrates for the drafting of these constitutions.

I would however wish to indicate another track, in complement of the preceding one.

The "sons of man" is an expression specific to Jesus, to which it is largely referred in series MATRIX, but I would not develop this; otherwise than for saying that Thomas was often allotted to the disciple nearest to Jesus, if not his brother, farther more the theories showing that the Thomas apostle was not other than Jesus himself.

Thomas anderson could thus be an obvious allusion to a "neo" Jesus. The many puns around Neo its, and come to unceasingly make echo between Déité and Humanité.

Yes, I do agree with these two explanations.

The thesis according to which mévovingiens would be of " divine blood " directly of the Christ is today very supported by numerous arguments.
It is likely that this lineage pursued its road at least to Louis 14 (the king sun) even until the King LouisBOURBON the 16 th beheaded during the French revolution...

Niobe can also be in reference to an egyptian or african queen and not necessarily the one in greek mythology. This would seem to better fit her personality. Thomas also literally means "two men" (answers.com). I've only been using answers.com to research meanings of names but it can be quite vague, and in many cases, rarely offers more than one reference that has a different meaning. It is still a place to start.

Niobe is an anagram for Ebion and the Ebionites, I think, were a group of people who believed in Jesus but did not believe he was the son of god. That would fit with Niobe since she doesen't believe in the One but she believes in Neo.

"The Animatrix film The Second Renaissance Part I alludes to the story of a robot named B1-66ER who ends up in a pivotal court case after killing his human master. It's been suggested the robot's name came from 'Bigger Thomas', the main character of Native Son, a novel about a black man in 1930's Chicago who commits a murder he believes he has no choice but to commit."

Cool huh. B1-66-er - Bi-gg-er , Found it here

This makes more sense in one scene in Enter the Matrix where Niobe calls the Nebechanezzar and gets the answering machine, as the "department of dream interpretation."

I did some more research on Native Son after reading this, and I'm convinced now more than ever that Native Son was indeed the inspiration behind B166ER. Bigger Thomas' reasons for committing the murder and the details of the resulting trial are copied very closely in the Second Renaissance (and the B166ER comic upon which that portion of the anime is based).

Much of the Second Renaissance can be viewed through the lens of racism--man's racism toward machines. This is also carried through to the higher levels of the themes of the Matrix as man rejects spirit, thus becoming alienated. The machines are imbued with the very spirit of man, yet when machines seek equality, man rejects them. The flesh puffs itself up in the presence of spirit, claiming to be its master. But as the Bible states, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. And as Smith (in the body of Bane) stated in regard to flesh, "nothing this weak is meant to survive."

Nebuchadnezzar was a king of Babylon who had a terrifying dream which no on could interpret but Daniel. The dream was of a statue with a gold head, sholders and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, legs of iron and feet of iron mixed with clay.

godandscience.org...

Some people think the belly and thighs represent the Roman Empire which split in two, an East and a West which can still be seen in European culture today.

I looked ip matrix inRandom House dictionary. It said:

Rome is The MATRIX of Western civilization.

The Logos will have to carry us into the future beause the statue in the dream of Nebuchadnezzar was destroyed.

The technology is too powerful for us to allow stupid, illogical cultures much longer. Whitelaugh Whitelaugh
