Are the MACHINES learning about HUMAN Emotions?
I had this idea that perhaps THE MACHINES are keeping HUMAN BEINGS alive because of some monumental disaster that befell the Planet. The only way that the MACHINES can learn about the HUMAN BEING is to study them.
Perhaps this version of the MATRIX was to try to grasp the concept of love,hope and faith.
The Oracle stated that NEO had made a "believer" out of her... faith and hope in the future perhaps?

Could be. Another possibility is they need to resolve a problem inherent in their programming. Since humans programmed them in the beginning, maybe they programmed also an inability on purpose.
