Has the opinion that Neo is not the one been explored? Yes, probably, but has the suggestion been put forward that infact Smith was the One. Granted Neo "had the gift, but it looked like he was waiting for something" that something being another life... thanks Oracle. Neo's other life was lived in Smith when he copied himself (accidentally into him)
Think of it this way, Smith was the one who stopped the war by using his greed to take over everyone within The Matrix, while Smith did not realise it, he was infact The One?
But of cource, to make Smith One, Neo must also have had to be One...which ultimately defeates the meaning of the term "The One". Also explaining why, "It is exactely as it happended before.... well not exactely" Since this anomely occured, the outcome of the War was different..
I think im slightly going off at a tangent with this, but id be curious to hear an opinion on it.... though im not sure i believe Smith is The One, myself!

Very ver interesting point. It makes some sense but it's not very realistic. Once again, I think you are just reading into it too much. The Oracle just meant he was waiting for something or someone to tell/show him he was the One. The whole discovery of him being the One is covered in the first film. After that, you just have to believe, or know, that Neo is the One. Good theory though.

Thanks Matt, I thought it was a good theory.. while i do not ultimately believe Smith was the One, I still wonder if he was the one who ended the War?

I think that when Smith said "it's happening exactly as before...well, not exactly." was a metephor for the entire ending of the trilogy. While I do not believe Smith was the One, I believe the Neo copying himself into Smith at the end of the first movie created a resolution to the war that had not been present in all the other "versions". This time around, not only did Neo have love to pull him back into the Matrix, but he had an opposite equal in Smith who was determined to destroy the entire Matrix and all the humans inside. While Smith was never intended to be the One, or equal to the One, he did now offer a resolution in Neo's destruction of Smith. Here, Neo had something to bargain with when he went to the Source.

Remember that at the end of The Matrix, Neo was killed by Smith, and then he came back to life, or was "reborn". Making everything that happens from this point forward, Neo's next life.

There is a theory which I like which says The One is the combination of Neo and Smith. If you think about it, it takes two sides to make one coin. Neo would be heads and Smith would be tails. Together, they make a complete coin.

Another way to look at it is as a battery. Neo would be the positive side and Smith would be the negative side. Together, they make a complete battery.

The Oracle actually comes right out and says this (from the transcript):

Neo: Smith.

Oracle: *nods* Very soon he's going to have the power to destroy this world, but I believe he won't stop there; he can't. He won't stop until there's nothing left at all.

Neo: What is he?

Oracle: He is you. Your opposite, your negative, the result of the equation trying to balance itself out.
