»Agents taking over people....«

Sorry if it's been debated before but whats your take on what happens to people who are taken over by agents? I know that if an agent is killed then the person they hacked into is killed(as seen in the rooftop fight in Matrix1) What about others that are not killed, do the agents leave them and they are stood there saying "how'd i get here?"? or do you think they would remember something of being taken over in such a way?

in Enter the Matrix, they show a cop that had been taken over and left somewhere. he was bewildered, didn't know how he got there, and assumed some kind of blackout.
