If it was set in medievil times, there is the problem of that lovely little thing they had called the Bubonic Plague. It was pretty much a slate-whiper concerning population, as far as I can recall. Meaning that the machines would be losing massive amounts of humans, and thus, losing energy. 1999, well, there's less to fear concerning things like that.

It is purpose that created us... connects us... pulls us... guides us... drives us...
