Why are agents needed at all?

ok i have been doing some more thinking and i do not no if you have covered this yet but here are some more questions...

why are agents needed??? If the cycle is meant to go threw with the one reaching the source everytime then why did the system create agents to try to stop it???
Maybe everything is actually the other way around and everything that you have learned in the first movie is true and everything that you learned in the second movie is false, there have been no other ones and no other matrixes-the architect just created this allusion by creating all of the programs that lie, and he is threatened by neo, or maybe the agents are not part of the system, they no the truth and they are trying to stop the heros so that the one can not reach the source and restart the matrix...just some more thoughts...tell me what you think.

Without agents ANYBODY could come thru to the Architect. The agents serve as a pre-filter.

So maybe the Merovingian is part of the defense system, too. Since he probably survived from a "much older version of the matrix" he could be a part of the system.

knnknn, I once held your views... but it does not fully explain why Agent Smith needed the codes to Zion's mainframe so badly.

It was his purpose to get them.

He doesn't know that the Architect is letting Neo come to him ("because Zion is about to be destroyed")

He's just a foolisch agent that has the purpose to stop Zionites by any means.

You'd think that would be the case... but his sole purpose was to get the codes. If he got the codes he would be free. Why? What exactly is Zions mainframe? Is it the essence of humanity to which machines don't have access to?

(See the Morpheus Interrogation from M1)

Zion's mainframe contains the only known record of the essence of "Shake and Vac".

Smith wants it to get rid of the smell of sweaty humans.

I think it is a bonus for the Agent Programs. If they find the access codes to Zion (before The One reaches the Architect), the machine losses in the final battle for Zion would be far less, and the Agents are awarded freedom.

Maybe they weren't fully planning on making 3 movies and the plot changed a little from the first one.

I think so too. With the codes, the machines might be able to shut down their defence and early warning systems, thus having an easy victory.

I wonder what would happen if you ate both pills...

There are several problems with that theory.

1) Smith mentions the existing of a prior Matrix or "The first Matrix" in his speech to Morpheus. Also he does not say that there was only one other but that he is speaking of the first.

2) Through Revolutions other sentient programs that have presumable functioned through the varies Matrixes refer to the other Ones.

On the other hand there are several references to this "occurrence" being different (Smith at the beginning of the film after Neo fights the first group of agents, Merovingian in reference to the prior One's having been more respectful, and the Architect referring to Neo realizing that the Matrix is older than anyone knows faster than the prior Ones). So many this One will be different than either was originally believed by the prophecy of the Oracle or the design of the Architect.
