Stephan Law is a Philosopher who has written two books introducing philosophy: The Philosophy Files (London; Orion, 2000; ISBN 185881790 - see amazon.com...) and The Outer Limits (London; Orion, 2003; ISBN 1842550624). Both are written at a level suitable for young adults(and illustrated by Daniel Postgate), but easily readable by others. The reason they are of interest to Matrix fans are the contents of of two chapters.

"How do I know the World isn't Virtual" (pp 28-54 in The Philosophy Files) is a discussion of exactly how we do (or don't) know that we live in a virtual world. There's also "What's Real?" and "Does God exist?" in the same book, which might also be of interest.

"Could a machine think?" in The Outer Limits considers the issues of AI, and is relevant to considering the machines as presented in the films.
