After seeing "Revolutions" and reading several posts on this site, the "matrix-within-a-matrix" theory has become even more convincing. However, the fact that "Revolutions" (and all of the Matrix films for that matter) remain open-ended and receptive to interpretation, insures that debate will continue. (faith in the unknown, right?)
Having said that - the one contributing factor that really challenges the notion that Zion is "real" is simply the condition of human nature. Human history dictates that we could simply not coexist in harmony with the machines. It comes down to the issue of control (and fear). There will always be a percentage of humans that will never fully trust the machines. (and I'm sure there will be a percentage of machines that will never fully trust humans) Because of this mistrust, both civilizations will continue to covertly develop defense mechanisms. (both sociologically and militarily). As a result - defenses will escalate, an arms race will ensue and a Cold War will be well underway. (i.e. the United States and the Soviet Union)
Perhaps I am making a simple story far more complicated, but what I find most compelling are the connections between Oracle and Neo, Machine City and Zion, Smith and Neo, and the Oracle and Architect. I think that there are underlying connections that are integral to interpreting the entire Matrix trilogy - I just haven't been able to put my finger on the unifying component. More specifically, I'm curious about the use of "eyes" in relation to the Oracle and Neo. We never really know the complete linear narrative. Are some elements from the past? The future? Or - could some narratives be happening simultaneously? The fact that Smith stole the "eyes" from both characters ... In addition to several clues revealed during the final Smith vs. Neo conflict - leads me to believe that the Oracle and Neo are connected in some way. Perhaps even part of the same "program". And following that logic - perhaps Smith is an extension of the "Architect"?
Could it be that the whole narrative boils down to the relationship between the Oracle and the Architect? Both characters representing the polar opposites of the human condition? (left and right brain) The Oracle representing intuition, chance, irrationality, emotion. The Architect representing rationality, logic and order. Man vs. Machine. Smith vs. Neo. The Oracle vs. the Architect. It's all intertwined and part of the same underlying theme. Perhaps the Oracle is Zion? The Oracle is Neo? The Architect is Machine City? The Architect is Smith?
