OK, I know: This poll is unfair, because the trilogy is multilayered.

But anyway choose what fits best.

If you have other suggestions, post them here, I will add them

I think it's mainly to do with choice, how you can decide what your own fate is going to be... No one or anything else is in charge of your future but you. Smile

After I saw the first movie, I thought a one word description would have been "Reality". The whole point is: what is real? And how can we tell what is real anyway? We are living in an unreal world but don't know it.

When I saw the second movie, I assumed the Zion wasn't real and that Neo was just another computer program. So we can escape from unreality into what we think is a real world, but then find out that reality is also just another construction. So I would have stuck with "Reality" as the one word description. (But maybe "Confusion" would also be appropriate, as I wasn't sure what was going on!)

Now that I have seen the last movie, I am not so sure, since those kinds of themes were not continued or resolved.

i think all of them are pre-destined:
neo will be the one
morphus will find him
trinity will fall in love with him
trinity will die
neo has to return to the source
zion will be saved

I feel that you should post a poll about the oracle's statement at the end of the movie.

Serph: You knew all along, didn't you.
Oracle: Nope. I just believed.
Girl: Look! Look what I did.
Oracle: Did you do that?
Girl: For Neo... Will we ever see him again.
Oracle: Oh... I believe we will. Bannerthanks

1 Corinthians 13 is the chapter of the Bible referenced in the Japanese anime Ghost In The Shell - the quote they use is "what we see now is but a dim image in a mirror, then we shall see face to face" - very matrix eh?

Well at the end of that chapter good ol' St. Paul writes that the most important things are faith, hope and love (and the greatest of these is love)

The first movie is definately about faith
The second movie is definitely about hope
The third and final movie is about love

The whole trilogy is about none of these things singularly - choice is also not what the trilogy is about. What the trilogy is about is the same as what the choice is about - what and who to believe.

So I chose "belief" as my answer in this poll.

"I am more than man, more than life! I am a GOD!"

I say choice! I saw the movies as what choices we make. We all have a destiny, but we also have choices to make that get us there.

I think you nailed it. But I would like to add something.

The Matrix: Choice & Faith
The Matrix Reloaded: Choice & Hope
The Matrix Revolutions: Choice & Love

What I mean is that overall, the movies are about choice. In fact, life itself is all about making choices. It is the coices you make that determine the outcome of your life. And besides choice, every movie has another "theme", that is developed in a deeper way in every movie, which are listed above.

I tend to go with Merv (The Merovingian) on this one. It is all about purpose. Another good "question" is "what is the meaning of life?" (according to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy it's 42).
All actions are triggered by cause and then resolved in causality.. E.g. when Merv claims to have to take a piss due to his exessive intake of red wine.. Intake of wine = cause - taking a piss = causality.. =)

Neo and the rest of the characters in these films are looking for purpose. Cypher in M1 lost his purpose and wanted to be reconnected. Morpheus looses sight of his purpose after Neo gets back from the chat with The Architect, but regains hope anyway..

It is about purpose! 3Tooth

The trilogy is largely about choice. I think that the trilogy is not just about choice itself, but what drives us to make choices. Neo, and many other characters are forced to make many choices throughout the trilogy, but I think it is WHY they make their choice that is most interesting.

How about adding "all of the above" -- ok I know it's not one word, maybe "everything", then?

the matrix is all about inevitability. the inevitability of a movie to leave so many questions without awnsering them. Inevitability.

Throughout all three of these movies there is the underlying theme of choice. Though, yes, life is all about making choices but most of us dont have to make these important choices. For example, red pill vs. blue pill, in the architect room, left door vs. right door, and with the oracle, whether to believe her or not. As Neo said specifically:

The problem is choice

as the page was loading. i thought LOVE. love for that special person and love for your people i guess. although, right when i clicked the button, the word 'choice' popped in my head. not only was the word mentioned in both movies countless times, but it is also about choice, mostly.

Without purpose, we would have no reason to exist. So what is YOUR purpose?

compromise.

Despite the fact that the movies never use the term compromise, that is what I believe the movie is in fact about.

Choice. Just another way of saying I am giving up something in order to gain something else. I.E, compromising your goals.

Coexistance. Just another way of saying I am giving you something in order for you to give me something. I.E, compromising with others.

There are many scenes where Neo (and many others) is obviously not willing to compromise. This is just as much a statement about
compromise as the scense where balances, co-existance, and agreements are reached. In fact there are very few scenes where Compromise in one form or the other isn't part of the plot.

Smith was ultimately defeated because he was unable to compromise and rewrite his function. His program compelled him to assimilated Neo.

Interesting that "Sacrifice" has only been chosen (!) by 7% of the forum here.

Perhaps sacrifice was too obvious a theme, and people are looking for something more obscure, but I thought the loss of Trinity and Neo showed that Sacrifice for the liberation of Zion was the most telling and most thrilling and - in a sense - most disturbing aspect of the trilogy.

Disturbing, because knowing the audience is young people, especially young males, the trilogy would seem to be preparing the audience perhaps to make such a sacrifice themselves in some future conflict, or even in the present conflict, the War on Terror.

Note that there have been a series of "big" movies where sacrifice of one's self in battle has been promoted: starting in 1995 Braveheart, the WWII epics Saving Private Ryan and Thin Red Line, Independence Day, Blackhawk Down, The Lord of the Rings, not to mention the western Open Range.

Not many pro-pacifism movies out there!
