You have to be registered to vote her.

As you maybe have heard, Sofia Stewart claims (and has filed a lawsuit) that the Wachowski brothers have stolen the idea to the matrix movies from her book "The third eye".

Well what about "Not enough evidence to prove it, but I wouldn't be suprised anyway..." then, which is what I really think.

Too simple

I won't add anything now, because this poll is too simple anyway:

"Yes, she had some part in it"
"They couldn't steal it, because Sofia stole it herself"
etc etc

this reminds me of how White Wolf is taking the makers of Underworld to court saying that the plot for the story was stolen from one of their books...

3 things

the funny thing about "art" is that nothing is new... everything has been done it is just about different interpretations of the same idea

also... say I design websites... perhaps 3 months ago I saw a site that had a border that I liked... now I am working on a site and I am thinking of a border and I create something similar to the one I saw 3 months ago... I didn't steal it/rip it deliberately but I was influenced by it

and... if they did rip off her idea deliberately then I hope she takes them to the cleaners but you have to remember that the entertainment industry moves very fast and it is one thing to have the idea and another to make it happen

I just wish they had ripped her off for parts 2 and 3 as well. Then the trilogy would be good. Mrburns

Speaking of rip-offs, how come we haven't seen too many Matrix movie clones?

I mean, with films like Terminator, there was a slew of "not-quite-human, not-quite-machine" flicks about. With La Femme Nikita there were a number of "ordinary-folk-as-spies" type films as well (e.g. The Long Kiss Goodnight).

But with The Matrix, where are the rip-offs (expects someone to post a list)?

perhaps no one has the heart to rip it off in full

since 1999 when the 1st one came out it has influcenced virtually every action/sci fi flick that has come out as far as action/fighting/effects

Since matrix is already a combination of films like:

total recall
ghost in the shell
open your eyes (remade as after the matrix as "vanilla sky", but that sucked)

And even so what are equilibrium and underworld if not matrix copies? It is not so much the idea of being in a fake world that is being copied since the ideas have been done so many times already. Instead it is the style which is being copied since that is what was really original about the matrix.

total recall is about being in a dream
open your eyes is about being in a dream

the wachowskis have admitted they based many ideas of the matrix on anime (the most obvious influence of which is Ghost In The Shell)

What was I prejudiced about exactly?

Also - Equilibrium is a rather classy little movie starring Christian Bale where one of the secret police in a totalitarian state questions his principles - many action sequences with similar style to the matrix ensue. Smile

Sounds similar to "Minority Report". When was it released?

I agree with you about "being in a dream" but the idea of the matrix isn't a combination of those two movies i mentioned.I haven't seen 3rd one you mentioned.

Um.... Equilibrium was released on DVD in the UK early this autumn.

Open Your Eyes is a fantastic film and the only film where I have not found Penelope Cruz's presence pointless or irritating. It is a Spanish film, but not a silly one. Don't make the mistake of watching Vanilla Sky instead since it is superceded by the original in terms of acting, structure and relevance of dialogue.

Sorry went for a rant here....

------------------------minor spoiler within the next paragraph-----------------------------

In other words the original does not contain stupid lines like "I shall meet you in another life where we are both cats" (don't be fooled - there is no relevance to this line in the movie at all) or odd references to Bob Dylan albums (for goodness sake he's just been listening to Radiohead in his car and he is supposed to be dreaming about Bob Dylan albums?).
(Also why would ANYBODY choose Penelop Cruz over Cameron Diaz? Please! Wink)

Well basically, in a nutshell (if you can sum up a game in a nutshell)

The world of SLA Industries is run by a man called Mr SLAyer, the head of the corporation, who 900 years ago came to the universe of the game to solve all the Wars that were going on!

These were called The Conflict Wars!

Many species of creature died!

Only a few survived!

(These are the character classes you can play. As a character you work for SLA Industries doing whatever you are told to do really. Imagine a SLA Operative as an FBI agent except that the "Squads" of characters have to undertake tasks ranging from Sewer maintenance/mapping to the assassination of a High Power Corporate member!)

At first the game appears to be about Big Guns and Futuristic ideals!
However the tag line of the game is "Guns Kill, But So Does The Truth"

This is where the similarity REALLY takes place!

Ultimately while the game is about the players completing missions to increase their SCL (Security Clearance Level)
Its all about discovering the "Truth" behind SLA Industries!

The Whole Ethos of the "minds" of humanity being enslaved is not to dissimilar to that of SLA Industries. Only in SLA its "Souls"!

I really don't wish to say too much about the "Background" story of SLA as they are actually the Writers guidelines and I could be taken to court if I were to publish them.

When my Role playing group went to see "The Matrix" we ALL came out saying that that is almost an exact rip of the Truth of SLA.

There is a scene, in "The Matrix" where Morph takes Neo to see the Oracle. At the bottom of the block of flats, Before they enter the elevator to go up to see the Oracle Neo and Morph walk past a man sitting on a plastic chair and nod at him.

On the back of one of the vacant chairs are sprayed the letters "SLA"!

Coincidence?

Of course, however, the idea of the matrix has been around for decades!
