Well, another theory (and all these literate guys might prove me to be to be not original . ):

- M1 started in real world as we know it too. Neo has a split identity as programmer and hacker. He is busy a long time on PC and got little sleep. Als he has an unspecified adherance to a conspiracy theory.

- His mind started to delude him in this state and the whole story evolves only in the mind of Neo.

- Real world persists and he is going to associate real persons with programs, agents and the like. Probably the agent was a manager who created a traumatic experience to him.

- There are so many hints in that film that makes reference to psychic dysfunctions to support this idea.

Just for support of these ideas: Think of the mind twisting 'Total Recall' and 'A Beautyful Mind'.

Well, I dislike this interpretation, it is not charming and a bit too sober. But I need arguments to refute it.

This is a very likely theory, i have thought of it myself as well, but it this is the ending of the matrix i will be so pissed. that seems such a gay way to end such a good trilogy but it is possible

It is a good idea. But what about all the other stuff that goes on and has nothing to do with Neo... Like the stuff in "The Animatrix" episodes... ?

Sorry, I don't call my initial statement a good idea, it is - as mentioned - too sober for my taste. I hate it, and I like to get arguments against it

BTW: I haven't got hold of "The Animatrix", but, as referrenced so often, I should ...

..they wouldn't have 3 films, a game, the animatrix, and loads of other stuff to do with the matrix just to have an ending of "and then he woke up".. would they? I hope not..
