My thoughts on the Matrix trilogy after
seeing Revolution last night in IMAX.
MiM’s the word - all the action of all three movies
happens within a single or layered Matrix.
There is no Zion, there are no corporeal
human characters except for the battery fields.
Follow along, if you will.
Neo is not human - he is the "Son of God", Christ if you will,
an incarnation of The Source in the human/matrix world.
He is an inseparable unity of man, machine, and code.
His power comes from beyond humanity and the Matrix.
He is sent to the Matrix, dies to free humanity (and Programity) and then
ascends to heaven (01).
This explains his ability to stop the Sentinels cold,
to see and manipulate code, and thus perform the Lazarus
move on 3nity, who died and was resurrected in the green
code matrix.
Neo (The Anomaly) is a purposeful creation of the machines -
they can not destroy Zion (real or imagined)
not only because of their power needs, but
because their (ancient) purpose is to serve humanity,
and as is repeated over and over,
all things must fulfill their purpose.
They need Neo to make the choice to destroy Zion for them.
And I believe the Gold energy Neo can see is indeed
still code - just seen more purely. Numbers, or green code,
are only a representation of real values - the gold code represents
the true underlying forms, that Neo is able to see as he
leaves his notional humanity behind and moves closer, literally and
figuratively, to his godly origin. This also explains why he can not
see 3nity as she dies in the hovercraft - he has crossed over the
threshold already and can not see back to the baser world.
The Architect makes the promise of freedom to Oracle-
a PROGRAM, NOT NOT NOT a human! Humanity is still trapped
inside the Matrix, as this is the only way a détente could be reached
among man, machine, and program (The UnHoly Trinity!).
Besides, it makes NO difference
to humanity whether it survives in the Matrix or the 'real' world -
as long as the love/hope/choice illusions are provided for.
Those illusions will be made more real via the input of the Indian
girl Sati - a program who is the offspring of two other programs which seemingly have developed the human ‘flaws’ of both love AND hope. (SATI is a old Hindu practice in which wives immolate themselves on their husbands funeral pyre, conveying their virtuousness in the process. Since Sati the character is not destroyed in the rebooting of the Matrix, but instead contributes to it, we can assume her name simply implies Virtue. But - what happened when Sati & Seraph were cornered by the Smiths?
Maybe we'll see a deleted scene from here on the DVD?
The Sunrise Matrix that Sati reboots looks far more full of hope (and virtue?) than the Matrix that Neo was awakened from in Eps. 1. She has perhaps also been influenced (modified, overwritten) by the ‘soul’ of Neo when he inserted himself into the Matrix (overwhelming Smith, who apparently embodied nearly the whole of the Matrix at the peak of his power). Here the circle of life is completed - “God” sends a half breed son to commune with humanity and absorb some of its qualities, the son defeats Chaos and Entropy (Smith as destructive cancer), becomes the Matrix, reshaping it in his own image and experiences, and then returns to God, or The Source, from whence he came, leaving in his wake a new structure for understanding between god and man.
Revolutions represents only the BEGINNING of change in the world, not the neatly wrapped up end so many seem to be hoping for. The Oracle can only “think” that they will see Neo again - she can not see beyond the raft of new choices that have been opened up by Neo’s ascension. Man lived in darkness until the 6th book of the Bible, the beginning of the New (Neo) Testament, when Christ's death cleansed men’s souls of sins and allowed for a renewed relationship with God. Neo represents the break between the past misunderstanding and war, and the future in which real choices can be made for a peaceful future.
In between, I’m stuck trying to figure out who the Merovingian and Oracle really are. The Templars assert that the historical Merovingians were the offspring of Christ and Mary Magdalene. If so, that would make “Merv” Neo’s son, which I suppose is possible as both The One and Merv are from primordial versions of the Matrix. Merv also holds the keys to the kingdom of Heaven, so to speak, vis a vis the Keymaker and his oracular knowledge of goings on in the Matrix. He also has godly powers to manipulate the matrix and alter programing, as he is the half-grandson of The Source. If Neo is his Dad, then who is his Mom? The Oracle? This would certainly make for a great Oedipal twist - especially as he seeks to have her eyes in Revolution! And with Trin as Neo’s lover, could she also be a mother? If not of Merv, then someone else? Her name leaves me the most befuddled so far. Unless we jump away from theo-logy to techno-logy. Trinity was the code name for a series of atomic bomb tests - the first ‘machine’ with the power to destroy all of humanity. Hmm. Neo’s love for Trin also provided the first opportunity for The Anomaly to CHOSE to destroy Zion and thus humanity! More proof that Neo is not human.
But I don't see how this explains the Merovingian’s slavish devotion to causality. Unless... the Merovingian, Seraph, Oracle, and all the other mid-level “deities” in the Matrix seem to be the equivalent of angels in Christian mythology - non-human immortals who lack the gift of free will that was bestowed on man. Indeed, each of their characters expound on how everything is proceeding according to plan, how what must happen must happen, how all things can do nothing but what they were predestined to do. Sounds like the sour grapes of a choice-deprived race of beings. Since they have no choice, none of them are able to understand what Neo is really up to and likely to do.
Which brings us to Agent Smith. As much as the W Bros like to play with names, “agent” is not just a job title, but implies that he is doing the work/bidding of another party. He also becomes a “free agent” when he gives up his earpiece. He rightly realizes, though, that his freedom is illusory. He continues to act according to his programming, seeking the destruction of The Anomaly, but now with vengefulness and spite as opposed to ruthless efficiency. He seems to have inherited EGO from somewhere. Maybe from his partial merge with Neo, but he seemed to have the stirrings of ego back in episode one. In his speech at the flying fight, it is clear he seeks only destruction - of Neo, the Matrix, the Machines, and not personal dominion over them. The purpose of all things is to end, I believe he says. He then IS entropy, kaos, darkness...Satan even? Nope - that's someone else. I propose that Smith is more closely attuned to Loki - the Norse figure who exists beyond boundaries, assistant and opposer of the gods, who brings about unintended consequences as a result of his actions. Loki was also promiscuous - maybe he raped Sari as he implies to Oracle? If so, what in God’s name will be their offspring?

So, Satan I mentioned. The Architect, perhaps? In Gnostic tradition, Satan is not a destroyer, but a builder, who created the world as a trap for man, to obscure God’s love from mankind. Describes The Architect to a T. He is the Arch-enemy, Archangel. Even his speech to Neo in the videodome is designed to confound him in his quest for his purpose and gnostic origins (as a godly entity). He states he’s not human in the park (one of my suspicions after Reloaded). And he seems to exercise free will and exhibit an understanding of choice, so he’s not a run of the mill angel. Instead, he’s Lucifer, the demi-urge, who exists both to define duality in nature and to obscure god-knowledge (sophia) from man via the trappings of RELIGION! Thus ZION is his creation, whether it is real or a matrix. Zion and its inhabitants are steeped in religion - temples, prayers, prophecy. Zion’s sole purpose is to keep man blinded to reality and in the Matrix - even more so than the Matrix construct itself. Religion is the opiate of the people, if we want to drag Marxism into this as well. Now we know what the Wacho Bros were smoking!
Wow, that was all pretty loose and rambling, but lots of stuff just occurred while writing about other stuff. I’m sure I need to see Revolution one or two more times, then watch them all in sequence again. Absolutely f-ing brilliant that the Bros created a movie(s) that didn’t go straight in one ear and out the other, and left so much room for people to answer their own questions. Remember, all you feeble minded folks who wanted everything tied up in a pretty little package with a pink bow, one of Satan’s tricks is draw people into putting their faith and belief in Messianic figures, rather than searching within themselves for their own godly origins!
Let the debate continue...
