Handy piece of info: printing © Your name, followed by the date, onto one's publication, film, animation, artwork, etc... without paying for an official copywrite is called a "Poor man's Copywrite". This type of copywrite gives you all the legal strength of an official copywrite save the ability to sue for money, from what i understand. Either way, one only ever stands to lose when confronted with stealing a copywrited work. This is why studios like Warner, Fox, Univ and so on constantly buy ideas. Fox, for instance, only ever uses about three percent of the ideas they buy (the crappy ones, apparently). The rest is insurance against this very thing.

It sounds like this is more than just story "stealing", which is philosophically impossible anyway - she seems to be implying that it was stolen, characters, plot-twists and all. there might just be a case if this is so.

Regardless, if she's just blowing steam and this is bunk, we'll hear nothing about it. If this is the real deal and is actually ruled as stolen, we'll hear nothing about it, but her continuing works will get a free ride on the WB train from then on. That only means a couple, or zero, more decent films from the sci-fi/philosphy genre. So who cares.

I've been reading a bit about the entire Sophia fiasco, and in my nature, decided to research the crap out of it. These are the results of my findings.

First, when searching Google for '"Sophia Stewart" Matrix', there are only 3 references on the Internet. One of them is from this "Spitboxers" web site, which doesn't exactly look like any official source of information, but we'll be getting into that later. The second result is just a minor forum posting. The third result is a dead link, however Google's good ol' cache allows us to look at the page as it was. The page says:

Quote:

=> VANDOR REP SUES WACHOWSKIS,
SILVER, WARNER BROS. OVER "MATRIX" -
$200 MILLION DOLLARS, INFRINGEMENT
AND RACKETEERING CHARGED; Vandor
Affiliate Sophia Stewart, Filed A Federal Lawsuit
In The United States District Court Of California
Against Hollywood Defendants Andy And Larry
Wachowski, Joel Silver And Warner Brothers

Following the link to the left we get the following article posted 10-17-2003 (which is posted here for archiving purposes):

Quote:

VANDOR REP SUES WACHOWSKIS, SILVER, WARNER BROS. OVER “MATRIX” - $200 MILLION DOLLARS, INFRINGEMENT AND RACKETEERING CHARGED

Hollywood, CA.

News releases concerning Vandor Music Group’s signing of two new production agencies and labels to their current 400-plus roster have ignited a media firestorm over a dispute of ownership of the original script of the film “Matrix” and it’s subsequent releases.

On April 24, 2003, Vandor affiliate Sophia Stewart, Salt Lake City, UT, filed a federal lawsuit in the United States District Court of California against Hollywood defendants Andy and Larry Wachowski, Joel Silver and Warner Brothers alleging copyright infringement of the movie "Matrix", all subsequent releases, and racketeering.

During an FBI investigation, key pieces of evidence were found establishing Sophia Stewart as writer/author of “Matrix”. Credible witnesses employed at Warner Brothers have come forward claiming company executives and lawyers had full knowledge the work in question did not belong to the Wachowski brothers. Witnesses also stated the original work of Stewart had been seen, and often used, during preparation of the motion picture.

Stewart submitted her original script through so-called ‘recommended’ channels several years prior to the Wachowski brother’s claim to authorship. Revenues from the motion pictures and merchandising are in the hundreds of millions of dollars and growing.

Stewart’s entertainment company “All Eyez on Me, Inc.” and Pop Silk Records have been contracted with Vandor Motion Pictures, Phonorecords and Music Publishing Group (vmgworldwide.com) as a production facility offering world wide promotion, licensing and distribution for the label since January 1st, 2003.

Vandor Motion Pictures, Phonorecords and Music Publishing Group, founded in 1958, has built a 45-Year reputation on independent product, artists, labels, publishers and producers. The company site - vmgworldwide.com - has been on-line for seven years and logged well over 10,000,000 hits and site downloads making it the number one source of accurate recorded music industry information in the world.

The article states "Stewart’s entertainment company “All Eyez on Me, Inc.” and Pop Silk Records...", so doing a search for "All Eyez on Me" turns up a staggering about of 2Pac info and Monica. Excluding all that we get a whole lot of nothing. (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22All+Eyez+on+Me%22+-2pac+-Tupac+-Monica+-Pac). Seems to me that this company simply does exist.

Additionally, her other apparent company, "Pop Silk Records", returns nothing as far as results go whatsoever. (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22Pop+Silk+Records%22). There are no records of this company on the internet either. You'd think a record company, something which has to be ahead of the curve as far as trends, would have at least some form of presence on the web.

Additionally, conducting a search for this Sophia Stewart and her book turns up nothing. They are not on amazon, and a search on google (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22Sophia+Stewart%22+%22third+eye%22) turns nothing as well.

Going back to the forum posts which display first on the "Sophia Stewart" Matrix search on Google, there are numerous documents, some relevant, others not so much. Some of the more relevant documents are the supposed letters to Warner Brothers. They are signed:

Sofia Stewart
PO Box 165153
Salt Lake City, UT 84116
(801) 575-8387

Now there is one big thing we notice with this document and the rest. Sophia's name is spelt differently throughout all of them. Is this evidence of just idiots working on the paperwork or some bad attempt at making this entire thing up? Sophia herself seems to spell her name "Sofia", however all other references are to "Sophia". Anyhow, conducting searchs on Google with the name "Sofia Stewart" turn up even fewer references.

Anyhow, I tried calling the number listed above to my great displeasure of having that traditional American (I'm Canadian) "beep beep, the number you are trying to reach has been disconnected". Too bad, I have a long distance plan for all of North America, so I would have loved to have the chance to talk to her.

The second result is a forum post which just has a casual mention of the fact of Sophia. Here's the post:

Quote:

Just a FYI for the team! The rackerter and copyright infringement case between sophia stewart and the wachowski brothers has been recently covered by a abc news team. ABC channel 4 in Salt Lake City Utah. The story is covered by Jill Young.801-975-4444/
abc4.tv...

Now unfortunately abv4.tv's site search is down, so I resorted to our good friend Google once more, using a site search for the term matrix. The search query is here again:

google.com...

It turns up nothing on the site relating to the Matrix save a review. I called the news agencies phone number and unfortunately Jill was out, but at least I know she exists! She doesn't, however, have voice mail and the gentleman I was talking to didn't know her cell number. I'll be trying again tomorrow morning.

Now things are starting to get better...

I phoned another number, (801) 220-0588 which was on a seperate lawsuit paper. This time I got a response, asked if Sophia was there - this was her! Anyhow, I explained I'm a dood from Canada just interested in the Matrix world and wondering what was up. She was very nice, although quite a direct lady, and gave me a number of references on the net to look at. One was Spitboxers.com actually, the other was 949zht.com. Within their web site,
949zht.com...
specfically, there is a link to see documents which Sophia submitted. Now in this case Sophia herself is spelling her name "Sofia", so I will henceforth use that spelling as her right and proper name. Back to the phone converstion, Sofia assured me that the complaint and suit was being taken seriously by the authorities. Good news, and she seems pretty serious about this. She was extremely busy on the phone, so she asked me to call back in exactly 20 minutes. Apparently she's getting a ton of media attention and was fielding a number of phone calls.

Called her back, now I asked her a couple of questions:

1. Why did you wait until now to follow suit?

Apparently she had filled suit way back in 1999, and going back over my records, its true. She filled the suit in 1999, only recently now is it finally moving to court.

2. Can I get a copy of The Third Eye?

First, its not a book, which explains the absense of it from Amazon. Its an essay she wrote. Really thick essay of course. I've read some of it myself now and let me tell you - it rules! Just to let you know, a lot of you were wondering about the entire black coat thing. She defines in her essay that its because that is the colour of the rebels, much like todays gangs.

3. Whats up with All Eyez on Me and Pop Silk Records?

They're just little start up companies she's involved with, all under that Vander distrib group. She really hasn't done anything with them quite yet.

Anyhow, she invited me to call her back later this night, so I'll keep you guys all informed. I must admit, reading her work (what was there) was very cool. Its good stuff and very reminisant of the Matrix philosophy. It takes some adjustment because there were obviously some changes the Wachowskis did, but if you can get used to that, its like experiencing the Matrix again. I welcome that.

So where do I stand now?

Reloaded and Revolutions were a huge disappointment. Reloaded was filled with some cool things, although no real revolutionary ideas. The backdoor thing was somewhat obvious, but cool, and the key/door thing has been done a million times. Nothing in either movie challenged the way we thought of the world like M1 did. Thus I am lead to believe that there was a huge change in the source (har har) for their matieral. When it comes down to it, the Wachowskis are great directors for kung-fu (although that was all done by Wo-Ping). Without the direction of a powerful script, the Wachowskis fell apart into their freakish gang-bang, shoot-em-up, goth, orgy style. I'm going to investigate this further, but something is telling me that there's a reason the two movies sucked, and I'm thinking this is it.

That's bogus. It makes reference to events that would not happen until years after Third Eye was written.

Copyrights come into existence as soon as you create the work. That is, as soon as you put it into some sort of physical form. In the case of a story, you cannot copyright it until you have written it down (or recorded it in some other medium).

They don't have to be registered; registration is merely evidence of when a work was created and who created it. You still have your copyright, even if you don't put the little C in a circle along with your name and the date.

Copyright protects creative expression, not the underlying ideas. To be successful in an infringement case you have to prove that the defendant had access to your work, and that there is a substantail similarity between your work and the defendant's work. Again, not just that the ideas were similar or even the same, but that the creative expression used by the defendant was taken from the plaintiff's work.

There are two reasons:

First is that there is a body of thought on the philosophy or art that a work must be examined while considering the creator and their social context. The Brothers and Stewart are obviously different people with different points of view, so the interpretation of the Matrix Trilogy would change if it had a different author.

Secondly is that it is simply a point of curiosity. Apart from any evaluation of the final work, it is rather titilating that perhaps the real creative genesis was stolen.

How does one "serial-murder someone"? Unless one's victim can come back to life, murder is a once-per-victim crime.

PHANTOMPROWLER'S MISSILE ATTACK ON FOOTLOOSIFER'S HOMETOWN THWARTED BY PRESIDENT BUSH'S "NATIONAL MISSILE DEFENSE"

Tallahassee, Florida-- Residents in this North Florida city say that the "axis of evil" has a new member, namely international terrorist mastermind PhantomProwler. PhantomProwler, or Pee-Pee, as his followers call him, went ahead with his threatened attack on Tallahassee by taking over Russian nuclear missile systems remotely from his secret lair in the South Pacific and launching the missiles at the city. Tallahassee has recently become famous as the hometown of the shadowy savior Footloosifer, who has conducted a one-man Internet campaign against the minions of his ex-girlfriend Sophia Stewart. However, residents report that Footloosifer had foreknowledge of the attack and telephoned White House officials, who immediately launched a counterstrike using the United States' newly minted Nuclear Missile Defense systems, or NMD.
Florida governor and Tallahassee resident Jeb Bush was quoted as saying, "Thank God for Footloosifer."

The "Axis of Evil" has vowed to continue its campaign to destroy its ever elusive target known commonly as Footloosifer. Axis of Evil? Quite an ironic name for a faction seeking to remove such scum from the face of this planet.

This is Inego Montoya reporting to you live from Tallahassee where Sofia Stewart has gathered a crowd of dedicated veiwers of the Maury Show along with its host outside of a home believed to be the residence of a one Footloosifer.

Is he the father of her child?

They are asking for a DNA test and they mean to get.

Until next time, this is World News signing out.

See, this is what I don't get.
Isn't the point of writing fake news that it should be somewhat believable?
Because I was just out in front of my house smoking a cigarette, and I didn't see a crowd.
On the other hand, since ICBM warfare occurs in space, my fake news could really have happened without anyone knowing.
So I guess you'll have to send somebody for me to give the sample to before I admit to your premise.

One might deduce that a serial-murder of an individual is a murder in serial, i.e. in a series. In other words, the statement implies that you are already, or will become, a serial murderer.

Is that a statement or a question? Usually statements are reinforced by facts. Unless you care to marshall a fair number of facts in defense of your statement, I don't think it means much. But then again, I encourage my fellow posters to read and respond to it. You seem to be full of opinions rather than passion, bluster rather than humor, vicissitude rather than strength. You would make a fine technocrat. Unfortunately, all that shit is going out of style with a vengeance in the face of AIDS, fundamentalism, resurgent fascism, a rising prison population (thanks to our friends the police and judiciary) etc. There is no Neo, there is no Christ, there is no Muhammed, there is no Moses, all that shit is fake.

The radical fundamentalist known commonly as Footloosifer emerged from his house shortly wearing nothing except a pair of Sponge Bob Square Pants boxer shorts and bunny slippers. Ignoring the crowd of angry protesters, he responded to questions given to him by this reporter by closing his eyes, placing his hands over his ears while spinning in a circle, revealing the unsightly holes in his underpants, merrily chanting "Nobody's here. It could never happen. Nobody's here."

The riot squad who had just arrived on the scene had begun prepping the tear gas and stun guns when he simply placed his hands at his side, hung his head in shame, and quietly returned back inside his home.

This is Inego Montoya reporting live.
