The persistance of people accepting this goes back to the brain-in a -vat hypothesis of the early 20th century. The matrix actually supports this philosophy, although in reality your "choices" are shaped by physiological devations, whether it be from enviroment or from genetics or from enviroments shaping genetics. Why can't people accept that like, homosexuals and other persecuted groups that people "choose" to be one way simply because they're biologically programmed to have those interests. I mean how many of us strait men get a boner consciously....you don't have to think much to wanna fuck Angelina Jolie...I mean come on. It really all stems from justification to hate someone. Like those right-wing christian morons who will never accept that homosexuality is pre-programmed, because then, oh my god, you can't hate fags any more! Shocked This free-will of "choice" if you call it stems directly from the brain's computationally irreducible structure, in which you cannot reduce the number of computational steps to describe its behavior.

Speaking as a male-to-female transsexual, (see El Escogido, Anubis1441, and Neo1's posts to my informal poll topic "IS FOOTLOOSIFER TRANSSEXUAL?") I found my former "manhood" to be too large for comfort. Today's sex-reassignment operation has given me a new outlook on life. Sure, there are some stitches, and the fact that I will be shunned by the "Moral Majority," as well as by homophobic Matrix nerds everywhere, for the rest of my natural life, but, hell, it was worth it. In the first Matrix movie there was a character named "Switch" who struck me as a woman who possibly started life as a man.

Maybe that will get this dismal thread back on track to matrix-related stuff.

Also, it seems quite obvious that at least one of the brothers is heavily into BDSM, just due to the sheer number of bondage clubs in the movies (The club Neo goes to in the first one, and Merv's club hell are two obvious examples.)

if Larry was transgendered, he probably would have had a gender-switch operation by now, being that he can certainly afford it, and most of his fans, their minds freed from ignorance, would accept it.

i think that he is not, i think that it was a rumour or joke that has gotten out of hand. fromt he pictures that i have seen on this website does not show or prove to me that he is a transexual. but if he wants to be let him that has nothing to do with us.

The only reason we are discussing thins is because he is famous, if he was your next door neighbor, or your a member of your family who was not famous then would we be have this discussion.

First off, i must say i naturally hate it when homo/transiphobes ridicule, slander, and otherwise condem the people who they hate publicly. Fine, Hate Transsexuals/homosexuals, but don't force it down my throat. As a Heterosexual Teenager who is the outcast of his school and is acused of being gay all day long, you kinda get a feeling for what it's like. I respect that transsexuals and homosexuals are what they are. One of my best friends has lesbien mothers, and they are very nice people. The kind of so called transsexuals are those men who have breast augmentation and facial feminization to become pornstars.

and no, i do not thing larry Wachaoski is a transsexual. i think he is what most people with brains call a "free spirit"[/b]

In popular parlance they're referred to as "She-males" ('cause that gets used on the covers of the porno mags they appear in). Cute, eh? Neutral

it simply discusts me. I mean, i'm sure there is a small section of them who are true transsexuals and they are desprate, want money, and are willing to be a pornstar to get the money they need to have full sex reassignment, but the rest...well, i have said what has been needed to be said.

A Christian Perspective

Hey, my first post!

Since no one here has clearly articulated the Christian perspective, let me post it for clarification.

The two primary issues relate to free will and the nature of man. Many hundreds of philosophers have weighed in on these issues, beginning with the Greeks, and continuing through the centuries to the present day.

The prevailing ethos of our culture is one of moral relativism (a result of post-modernism) which states that the particular "rightness" of an action or thought depends on who is speaking and the situation at hand. Thus, what one person decides is right is "right" for them and it is perfectly logical that this decision could be opposed by another person and that other person's view is equally correct. This philosophy presupposes that there is no higher authority to which to appeal. We can only look inside ourselves for the answer. Therefore, no one can claim they are right because there is no outside objective standard that judges that action or thought.

When taken to it's (ill)logical conclusion, the moral relativist finds that they do indeed appeal to a vague notion of "as long as it's not hurting anyone." This brings the discussion back to the issue of Cannibalism. The poster tried, however unsuccessfully, to point out that if you happen to live in a relativistic culture of Cannibals, then what is "right" for them is to kill you and eat you. Therefore, your existence is worth only the food value your death brings to them. If this strikes at the heart of you as being "wrong" then you have to admit the presence of some sort of universal standard that seems to be written in our collective consciousness. The noted Princeton professor and atheist Peter Singer allows for the logical outworking of this argument to extend all the way to forced euthanasia and selective breeding according to the Darwinian model which became a foundation of moral relativism. But don't take my word for it, read Peter Singer's books for yourself. He is unapologetically pro-infanticide for anyone born with a birth defect (there goes the hermaphrodite's chances of living).

You have every right to believe as you wish. However, those ideas can indeed be tested against objective understandings (such as the belief that your right to live is a more important right than the Cannibal's belief in his right to eat you). For a discussion on the existence of truth, and can truth be known objectively, I refer you to Kierkegaard, Kant, and Locke on the subjective side and Descartes, Plato, and Aristotle on the objective side.

I know many of you would be intimidated to even think about reading philosophy. But the simple fact of the matter is that you carry a philosophy that was taught to you whether you realize it or not. Wouldn’t you like to know where your thoughts like “As long as I’m not hurting anyone, it’s ok” came from? Our grossly inadequate school system fed us only one side of the story and did not give us the chance to truly decide for ourselves. Conversely, some churches also only provided one side of the story. Don’t be a parrot. Know why you believe and say the things you do and be able to back them up.

The Christian perspective, then, explains the problem of objective standards in terms of answers for free will and human nature. These answers are based on a group of writings commonly known as the Christian Bible. (Before you attack the historicity of these writings, know that we accept Homer's account of the Trojan War as factual history based on only seven surviving copies of the original manuscript. Conversely, there are over 5,000 historically accepted copies of the New Testament. But you should research it on your own.)

The Bible states that God created Man and Woman. Lucifer, an angel who rebelled against God, deceived Adam (yes he is as fully responsible as Eve) and Eve into disobeying God. This introduced what is known as Sin into the world. God then decided to let man choose for himself whether he would follow his (God's) laws or man's own inclinations. This is the concept of free will.

The other theme is that of man's nature. Some philosophers have tried to argue that man is basically good or is born with a blank slate. This is not what is taught by the Bible. The Bible says that man has inherited the natural tendency to choose our own laws and ways above God. (Incidentally, the founders of the United States wrote into the Constitution a balance of power arrangement that reflects their understanding that man, unchecked, will choose selfishness and grab for as much power as possible. I know many were Deists, but they did a fair job of creating a workable free society.) This is the concept of fallen nature. It says that man is born with a propensity for evil. Now that propensity can be "redeemed" but the issue of salvation is outside the scope of this post. If you are interested, I invite you to simply read the Book of John in the Bible for yourself with an open, critical, and analytical mind.

So, we are born with a free will and that free will is bent "naturally" to evil. This is what the Christians believe. We lay all of mankind’s poor choices and atrocities on this reason. We also believe that man can redeem that proclivity to selfishness and evil through a salvation experience and a relationship with Jesus Christ. See previous paragraph.

From this understanding then, we can argue effectively on social issues. It has been scientifically proven that some people are born with a propensity for alcoholism. Does this mean then that we should just let alcoholics act as they please? No. We passed laws to keep them from driving drunk. Why? To keep them from hurting others in their impaired state. Christians believe that alcoholics can be delivered from their destructive habits. Their natural nature can be transformed.

Through a choice of their own free will, alcoholics have achieved a transformed life.

Finally, back to our question of so-called "trans-gendered" individuals. Due to my belief that this world has fallen away from what God intended, many defects have arisen as a result. We are forced to get food from the ground by the sweat of our brow instead of from a botanical garden (think fruit trees and little or no work). Women bear children in pain instead of whatever the plan was before the sin of Adam and Eve. People now have drastically shorter life-spans compared with those thousands of years ago. People are born with biological dispositions to alcoholism and drug addiction. I place people with tendencies towards homosexuality, trans-gendered, etc. in the same unfortunate boat.

My own sister has identified herself as bi-sexual. While I disagree with her choice and her solution, I don't hate her. On the contrary, I love her! But that doesn't mean I merely acquiesce to her lifestyle choice. I believe she can change, if she chooses to. Many others have. Many alcoholics have overcome their own genetic predisposition to alcoholism. Research it for yourself.

The final question then is what harm is there in trans-gendered or homosexual people? Why can't they just live as they want to live? They're not "hurting anyone else" with their behavior. Really? That is the question for another debate. But the Christian view is that there is something better for them than living that promiscuous lifestyle. God does love all of us equally.

I know most people on this board will think I'm a fanatic. But a reasoned, thoughtful approach to these issues will show the Biblical perspective to be an extremely competitive (and I believe correct) answer to these social issues.

The Matrix movies are all about inclusiveness and I understand that the W brothers have cobbled together a "pop philosophy" that is a sophisticated yet watered-down version of each of the worldviews. I'm thankful that they made the movies though because hopefully it gets each of us to truly examine our lives and the way we choose to live them. I hope I have provided an adequate defense of the Christian perspective.

Let the debates continue!

God made people a certain way, and therefore they should accept themselves as they are and not try to change it.

While we're at it, I vehemently oppose all OTHER forms of changing one's birth status. Those EVIL BASTARDS that think to oppose God's will by giving sight to the blind, or who remove birth defects like extra lungs and hearts, or by splitting siamese twins and allowing them to live. These so-called "doctor's" defy god's will every day. The true evil here is not transsexuals, but the modern medical establishment. God grants the gift of disease to teach us the evils of our ways, and human arrogance makes us think that we can use science to change God's will and make people something OTHER than what NATURE has made them.

Some day, our attempts to control our own lives will come back to haunt us. Our attempts to cure the sick, heal the wounded, and CHANGE our bodies will destroy us. Just you wait and see.

Lets say you got shot...would you not WANT to take the bullet out and stop the bleeding? What if you told the people in the emergency room "Hey! God gave me this bullet! Leave it in so I can die a horrible death."
I would gladly change by body to live. I have to agree with you on some things...some people DO go too far but not in this case. I also believe our own technology and ways of life will backfire...it already is happening. Some people are actually born with the brain of a male but the body of a female and some are born with the brain of a female but have the body of a male. God wants us to take care of his temple. In the Bible it says that he actually lives inside of each and every one of us. In other words we should work hard to keep ourselves healthy and if need be than have surgery to correct things that are not normal.

i will tell you a little story, when i was in high school i had a good friend. and at the time we didn't no that he was gay. but all through high school he couldn't come out, why? because he was afraid that he would be teased and tormented.

but when he finished high school, he finally came out and he has never been happier.

moral of the story is that sometime we have to change and not be afraid, and not fear what other people the world is going to think or say of you, in order to find happiness.

Qestion, if you were born a hemaphrodite, then you would say god made me this way so i will let the doctors keep my willy and my hairy tacco shell and live my life as a freak.

ERR! WRONG.

you would have them removed in order to live your life normally. Some would say that it is an illness others would say that it is a psychological problem, were you are born one sex, but feel that you are the other.

People like this arn't sick, or evil, or even defying god will. they are truying to be who they are.

and at the end of the day, if your so call god, loves all of his children equally, then he would let them in hrough the gates of heaven.

Your god (jehovah?) may have made you the way you are, and my Goddess (Cybele) made me the way I am.

You assumptions are laughable, since they still revolve around the idea that external appearance at birth reflects interior truth. I am a daughter of Cybele, whose following predates that of your demi-god Yosha (check out Eunuchs in your Bible - that was us), and my transformation both physical and social is a spiritual pat, and one no less valid than your own.

It's doesn't matter who you are, it matters how you behave.

I have nothing against gays, but I have something against gays who visit all those damn parades and fuck each other like if there is no tomorrow.

This also counts for a transsexual or travestite. If you keep this matter private then nothing is wrong.

Going for a sex change is also good, but then I think that you should not work in the public sector like police, social worker, etc. This is work where you come into contact with other people alot and my opinion is that it could shock them and this is not good for both the transsexual himself/herself as it is not for the people he/she works with.

It is also my opinion that the transsexual should pay for his/her own operations and hormones. It is not right that they claim these costs from social insurances/funds.
And what if they can't afford it? Too bad, then they should get better jobs. If you really want to achieve something for yourself, you must be willing to be disciplined.

So what you're saying is, that certain folk who are different from you, are OK, provided they: aren't obvious, don't have fun (in their own terms), and don't spook the horses? A very homo- and trans- phobic position, and one that assumes a natural authority of the majority. As far as paying for surgery goes, isn't that a matter for individual countries medical schemes?
