What exactly is his purpose, is it just to make keys? If so why do they want to delete him?

In anwer to this question, his purpose was to lead Neo to the source, through the back doors, with all his keys and things, then give neo the key to the source. This was so that the architect could tell neo how to reload the matrix and all that guff.
