The Merovingian
Another interesting character introduced to us in Reloaded and Enter the Matrix.

Who or What is the Merovingian. Stating the obvious, he is a program. But why can we see him? Because he is an exile. What was his purpose? Read on for a possible answer.

We all know now that the Merovingian is a very dangerous program and he was one of the first. We also know that he wouldn't let the keymaker go willingly. Free Will? Think while continuing to read.

From what has been told to use in the movies, the programs, when initially created are invisible and we wouldn't even know they were there. We also know that if they break down, or a newer version is created, then they have the option to return to the Source or become an Exile in the Matrix bound in disguise of a human body. So I think it is safe to assume that all programs that are visible (save Agents. I will explain this some other time) are Exiles of the system.

Right now take all that information and have a read of this (From the architect scene):

You are the eventuality of an anomaly, which despite my sincerest efforts I've been unable to eliminate from what is otherwise...

Neo: Choice, the problem is choice.

If you haven't already guessed, what I am trying to get at is that the Merovingian was an attempt (by the Architect) at creating a program to govern choice - or apparent free will. This would explain many things about why the Merovingian is the way he is, and why he can do some of the things we know him capable of.

All in all basically what I'm saying is the Merovingian was a program created by the Architect (possibly in the perfect world Matrix) to govern 'choice' or 'free-will'.

That's a good theory, but I have my own.

The Mervoginian seems like he enjoys the funner things in life, his mansion, the raver party, wiping his ass with silk, and his nice cars.

Because of his free dominion over what he wants, I think he was created much like the way Sati was created, so therefore he has no purpose, and he does what he wants.

But, The Mero does have a purpose. He is a Trafficker of Information. He controls Mobil Ave. and the TrainMan. Seems to me that he is not an Exile program, but a powerful functional one. Maybe the TrainMan is a sort of 'firewall' program, he allows people on the train and dangerous programs cannot get on the train. Seems Mobile Ave. is a DMZ.

I don't think anyone can govern choice, that is the anomally which the Archtect speaks of. Perhaps what you mean is the Merv was meant to GUIDE someone to make a choice, but I still am not convinced that that was he Merovingian's job. I believe that Merv and Persephone were the first programs created in the first Matrix with choice (The third matrix in all since the Architect said he failed twice until the mother of the Matrix [Oracle?] stumbled upon the solution) to alpha test it for problems. In the Matrix, they sampled everything and reported back. After their job was done, they weren't required anymore but they didn't want to leave, so they became exiles.

i think that the Merovingian started as a behaviour analysing program who reported back to the Architect to smooth out wrinkles within the Matrix.

merrovingian also refers to seraph as his student...whats up with that?

Thats a cool theory.

Clearly, Merv is powerful because he is Satan(Persephone was married to Hades in Greek mythology)

Therefore he was the "morning star"...An elite angel....maybe an Agent of the System....

But when he realized how pointless it was he rebelled....like Satan in the Biblical allusion.

Maybe he wrote the program of Seraph....he wrote that program/piece of cake for the blonde in Reloaded, didn't he?

it's possible that the Zen-like Seraph also started as an analyst program, trying to figure out the WHY of what humans do. the Merovingian refers to Seraph as both "progidal son" and "my little Judas" leading me to think that Seraph was once ranked highly among the programs there, but was ah, enlightened by the Oracle and freed of the Merovngian's influences.

i think.

You misunderstood. The Oracle didn't say they were literally invisible, and she was not referring to sentient programs.

What is with the idea that the Merovingian is Satan? I think we need more information on that theory.

Maybe this will help?

I don't think the Merovingian represents Satan. theirishduke above sees this because his wife is Persephone, but Hades was Lord of the Underworld, not Satan. There is a difference.

I believe the Architect to be Satan. According to Gnostic mythology, which is heavily evident throught the Matrix trilogy, God didn't create the world: instead, the world was created by Satan, intended as a prison for humanity... sounds sort of familiar, doesn't it? The Architect created the Matrix (the world) as a prison for humanity too.

I tend to think the Merovingian was a previous One, but this has probably been discussed elsewhere... think I'll go find that thread and discuss it there...

I saw this on another thread and thought it may fit better here

drumcode wrote:

please reference your explanation via url. the merovingian program is a daemon. in computer science, a daemon (sometimes called a phantom) is a particular class of computer program which runs in the background, rather than under the direct control of a user; they are usually instantiated as processes.

systems often "launch" daemons at start-up time: they often serve the function of responding to network requests, hardware activity, or other programs by performing some task. daemons can also configure hardware (like devfsd on some Linux systems), run scheduled tasks (like crond), and perform a variety of other tasks.

since the merovigian program is a trafficer of information that has sampled every language. we can assume that the program faciltiates language. trafficing of infomation does not comply with testing or even dealing with anamolies of any level. such actions would not be in line with that program's purpose - the agents are responsible for that. through the merovingian's purpose, the program has amassed immeasurable wealth and power via information. a reset of the matrix would nullify that ammassment. improsoning the keymaker to specifically hinder a reset would not contradict the purpose of trafficing information.

This is how I belive the Merovingian operates and is his puropose in the matrix

It also halfway explains how he is the matrix satan or demon (daemon) not to mention culb hell.
