My thought is that Smith was deleted. His purpose was to destroy the anomoly and that was done. Therefore, Smith did what he was meant to do and there you go. Tripleconfused I'm gonna have to watch it again.

Although it's not the most eloquent way of explaining it, I agree with that last post.

Since M1, Smith has been trying to vanquish Neo. After the whole Neo penetrating Smith in M1, Smith was not an Agent anymore. He had lost his purpose. He was angry with Neo for taking that away, so his new purpose was to defeat Neo. Once that was accomplished (via copying himself over Neo), Smith had no purpose.

I think that the computer system had a hard time dealing with Smith as a virus, but once Smith had no purpose, he became a useless program, which is easily deleted.

But this is just a guess.

Another way of looking at it is that Neo and Smith were in perfect balance. As Neo got stronger, so did Smith.

The Matrix maintains balance through its equations. Once Neo was "killed" (overwritten by Smith), there was an imbalance, so the system corrected it by killing off Smith.

There you go... 2 explanations... lucky you, you get to choose!

and here's a 3rd one, for good measure.

Maybe Neo was too powerful for Smith to overwrite. Once Neo was assimilated, he became the antivirus for Smith. Just like a virus corrupts a system, an antivirus corrupts the virus. Luckily, the programs (Oracle, Seraph, Sati, etc.) were not dammaged irreversibly.

We only ever seen Smith assimilate 1 human, right? Bain? Do we know if any of the numerous other smiths walking around were humans, or were they programs he had assimilated, like hte other gaents. He /tried/ Morpheous in Reloaded, and Neo, but that got him killed of course.

I think Smith WAS successful in assimilating Neo, since the new Neo/Smith nodding at him like everything was okay. Then either the remaining Neo code executed, or the machine/souce did something, which resulted in that big jolt and a whole bunch of dead smiths.

Not totally true... as the oracle said Smith would first destroy the matrix, the human world then the machines world. He was supposed to continue until nothing was left.

So I also support the theory of Neo + Smith = 0

But I thought Smith was glad about beeing free and not connected to the machines anymore.

Another idea: Neo was connected to the matrix (machines).Smith wasn't. So when Smith fused with Neo he was connected to the matrix(machines) again.
And so he could be deleted by the machines.

I got the general idea that it was the machine thingy; once smith infected neo, the machines were effectivly inside smiths head (what with having a metal spike into a copy of him), and coul dthus come up with a way to beat him from the inside out as it were, and once they did it once they coul d do it to everyone, and use neos code to reset the matrix while they were at it

Neo allowed Smith to take control over his body, sacrificing himself for the good of the Matrix. He only did this so that there would be peace in Zion. After Neo was overwritten by Smith, Deus Ex Machina was able to delete Smith's code because it was hardwired through Neo's body which the God had direct control over.
