»Haven't we learned ANYthing?«

The Matrix is not about all about plot lines, entertainment value, aesthetic appeal. It is about the strongest, most profound question in our world. To Love or not to Love? It is just a parable people; a story with no inherent 'plot' value - it's real intention is to imply a wonderful message.

PLEASE (sorry for the capitals but this is important), please do not bag the film for its obvious superficial failings. The Wachowski brothers have taken a step for the good of everybody in conveying some of the deepest questions we have to ask ourselves in a medium spanning the globe. Watch the movie again, and again, and see for yourselves it's *real* beauty... The very meaning of your existence.

It's good to finally hear that coming out of more people. My opinion based off of my own experiences and beliefs is just that it was asking, "to have meaning or not to have meaning", or "to be or not to be" to get cliched lol.
I think what was superficial was the love aspect of it. Why did Neo have to have someone to motivate him to do the things he did. Why doesn't he or we, try and figure out the question without having to have someone other than himself push him along the way. Furthermore is the question, since we constantly here "CHANGE your mind" or "MAKE UP your mind" should we start to question whether our whole life is a construct solely of our own making like Smith says during the final moments of the last fight. Should we question that everything we see and hear, feel and touch might be of our own mind's creation.

Another thing I thought of is the whole meaning of life, when you think about it, our whole purpose of being encased in a mortal body on earth is to die. The only things we're sure of is that we were born and we die, as it ties into each and everything we do. If you don't eat you die, if you don't work you die. If you eat you die, if you work you die, if you were to be frozen for an eternity you would still have to wake up at some point and die. If you were to have your whole body rejuvenated so you never aged your mind would still collapse from wear and tear and you'd still die. And if we weren't to wear and tear, than obviously our whole meanings and associations would be come worthless and you would either die, or you simply would not be.

I think this is a good point.

We see at the start of #3 that programs seem to have "love", and even though the program itself explains that like "karma", this is just a word, it's clear to see that the end result is the same -- think more of someone else than yourself.

I agree that the underlying theme of the Matrix is ::love::

Its transcending the survival/ body/ illusion of Maya (which Smith represents ie "the point of life is to die") and awakening to the true nature of the Universe

True Love is compassion for all beings, be it organic or mechanic, and with compassion comes freedom and choice- I think trinity represents the union of man, machine, and God or Consciousness: the ever new bliss of awakening to the true nature of interconnection-
