The monkey in Matriculated is known as a Tarsier. It has extremely receptive eyes and can pick perceive many different kinds of light and movement. It can also move its head 180 degrees, giving it that weirdness most people pick up in the episode. Interestingly enough it has the highest known chromosome count of any primate (including humans) at EIGHTY.

Who knows what these little guys are capable of? Perhaps this is what Matriculated's designers were hinting at.
